The Hunger Games...
Bit slow on the old boat here, but The Hunger Games, here we go... (Spoilers below)
So I heard about this little ditty back in November and very nearly brought all three books whilst I was away travelling - however my poor packing skills took the better of me, so I waited. A touch too long might I add. The film came out on the 23rd March and it threw me into panic. People were commenting on it left right and centre and I had yet to get involved.
Involved I got... I am have been laboriously trying to get through Game of Thrones so that I could move onto HG (Hunger Games). So weds was the day, and by last night I had smashed through it. I am in LOVE... Its been compared to being the new Twilight which I would like to stop right here. I dislike Twilight with every inch of my being. I hate the books... and yes Ive read 1 and 2 and could not bring myself to pursue the terrible writing any further without pulling out my brains slowly. I also hate the films, Kristin Stewart managed to ruin any hope I had for the series.
Now HG is utterly fantastic. I was drawn into it in a big way. And when it says you cannot put it down, its right. I couldn't, I was falling asleep book in hand powering through it because I didn't dare stop. I needed to know what happened at the end of the book. I needed to know who succeeded. I needed to know EVERYTHING.
The idea I think is brilliant, pitting teenagers against each other in war is genius. The way its written and the topics it covers speaks directly to the target market of young adults, and well to anyone I think. Its incredible easy to read, and follow.
The constant energy that keeps the book going is undeniable. Collins really keeps you going right up until the last page. The brutality of the killings is breathtaking, especially Cato right at the end.
Now with any great teen book there is always a team to fall into, (the only similarity i will allow to twilight) and that is whether you are Team Gale or Team Peeta. Katniss (our main lady) is best friends with Gale and has been all her life. Now Peeta, her fellow tribute from District 12, who is madly in love with her, who she must make the audience of Panem believe that she loves, and secretly within the arena i think she does, creates a beautiful triangle does it not???
Her love for Peeta does show and she does truly care about him, and when it comes down to it they both survive (because of a cunning twist by the gamemakers and a little game play from the tributes). But the journey back to District 12 brings Gale back to her mind. Will she stay with Peeta or move on the Gale... my heart cant help to go out to Peeta, but I think I am well and truly Team Gale on this front.
Now the film beckons and I must see it immediately...
