One Day - Post II

So last night I went and saw the most hotly anticipated film of the year for me. I entered the cinema in all a fluster unable to settle. To say that I was stressed out would be an understatement.
I was worried about a multitude of things most of all how I was going to cope? (not well) How Miss Hathaway will sound? (ok) How Em and Dex would work? (Brilliantly). So in amongst this I was having a mini panic attack during the previews. Then as the film started the screen went off centre and it was half way up the wall. The sentence “Vue why are you doing this to me?” actually eeked out of my mouth as if it was a personal attack to my nerves. Alas it was all resolved and I settled down for quite possibly the best adaptation of a book into a film I’ve ever seen! This is not said lightly as I am a massive advocate of NEVER touching books and making them into a film, I just don’t think they work – unless they are filmed in two 3 hours epics in two halves (aka Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows). But this text lent itself to the big screen, and although things have had to be cut and changed around it was done so well.

I nearly started the crying off right at the very beginning as the film opens at their graduation and I started to feel desperately nostalgic, but I managed to hold it together.

So things that I liked:
  • The Music! The song choices were so fitting. Even managed to fit in a wee bit of S Club 7 and Ronan which the child inside me LOVED.
  • The clothes! Hitting that 90’s vibe well and truly on the head. The stylist got everything down to an absolute T (even the set designs were fabulous – Emma’s University room was pretty much as I imagined – however most university rooms are pretty standard). Emma’s geeky yet pretty floral dresses were so Emma and her hair was just as it was in my imagination, especially in her early years. The scene at Tilly’s wedding was almost perfect, Emma’s Chinese dress again just as I imagined it.

Also whilst on Tilly's wedding quite possibly my favourite moment of the entire film...Tilly singing Angels (to which Kathryn leans in and says "Farah on her wedding day" - which lead to uncontrollable laughter)
  •  I liked that certain parts of the film were left out/ not mentioned (very rare that I would like this – normally I am all moany about this)

Things I loved:
  • Ian Whitehead who was played by Rafe Spall, who in my eyes stole the show. Brilliant casting, amazing acting, he just grasped Ian’s character perfectly although he looked a little like Lou in Little Britain.
  • I loved how Anne and Jim connected; it really felt like they were Em and Dex falling in love for real.
  • I absolutely adored Romola Garai (from The Hour very good British Drama for those who haven’t heard of it also played Briony Tallis in the movie version of Atonement) as Sylvie.
  • Finally I have reignited my sheer adoration for Jim Sturgess! He is one beautiful human being and to quote my friend Kathryn during the film “fit man and baby – god your killing me”. Watching him break down was genuinely heart-breaking.

Things I hated:
  • ‘That Scene’ – so wonderfully done but I hate it for what it is and I cant change that.
  • The fact that they go on holiday to France instead of Greece and Dex teaches English in Paris not where he does actually in Rome. But they are very minor details that I can learn to live with.

To end:
I was utterly a puddle! I had to physically restrain myself from bawling my heart out. If I wasn’t in the cinema some seriously loud crying would have happened. The women next to us looked at us as if we were mental and uttered the words “it’s not sad”. Well either I am a complete emotional wreck or they have hearts of stone either way I was near inconsolable. If your planning on watching be prepared, take tissues! But it was hilarious too.

I will be watching it again and again and again.
Favourite book, now favourite film….cant wait for the DVD and DVD extras (purely so I can perv on Jim Sturgess in the privacy of my own home)

One more little note:
